Erin Condren & DonorsChoose.org

ecxdonorschoose_960

We’re honored to announce that we will be partnering with DonorsChoose.org during this year’s Back to School season.  For every Teacher’s Lesson Planner sold now through August 31st, we will be donating $1 to projects of YOUR choosing.  At the beginning of September, we will open up a nomination period in which we will ask you, our customers, to nominate projects on the DonorsChoose.org platform that you think are deserving of being funded.  The Erin Condren staff will then select projects from those nominations and other projects near and dear to our hearts to fund using the money raised.

We selected DonorsChoose.org based off of feedback we heard from our customer base and because we love that they make it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need.  Ultimately, they are helping move us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.

Stay tuned to our blog and social channels for more information on how to nominate projects in September.  We’re so excited to hear from you, and make a difference in classrooms across the country!

$1 of the purchase price from the sale of each Teacher’s Lesson Planner sold in the continental United States will be contributed to DonorsChoose.org. This contribution is not tax deductible by purchasers. The promotion shall last until 8/31/2016, and will have a guaranteed minimum contribution amount of $25,000.

Putting the FUN in Fundraising: Hearts of Hermosa 2016

HOH 1

With more cuts in state funding of public schools, it’s becoming more and more challenging to get the support we need to get the education our kids deserve. Years ago, our precious school had to cut our our music program and we fight each year to save our library and other valuable assets that can’t survive without the funds we raise in our community.

Our largest fundraiser of the year is called HEARTS OF HERMOSA and we literally pop a (huge) tent in a parking lot in the heart of Hermosa Beach.

The committee of volunteers is incredible, and the key is making it FUN so others want to get involved! We have to learn how to get creative on a budget so here are some tips to help YOU put the FUN into your fundraising!

Without a big budget for beautiful blooms, choose simple florals that make a big impact. The cascading green Amaranthus was the perfect compliment to the large Hydrangeas and made it easy for a team of volunteers to arrange at all the sponsored tables. Call on local businesses to fill a “swag bag.” Promotional giveaways are great marketing for many small town shops and everyone loves to leave with a party favor!

Don’t leave out the crafty moms!  This hand-painted broom started at $50 and really complemented my evening’s look!

HOH 5

Create unique and one-of-a-kind auction items that people will want to fight for! We have each classroom create a special project for the silent auction and I am always blown away by the creativity! Precious photos and wall art always seem to get the highest bids.

Don’t forget to call on your local photographer to provide a photo booth!

Create a committee to solicit donations from your favorite companies all over the country! It is tax deductible for their business and it will hopefully bring more eyeballs to their products and websites.

As a business owner and donor myself, it feels good to give back! We get hundreds of requests each month for donations and just couldn’t keep up with the inquiries. Soooo, we are automating this process through the website and hope to be set up soon to send an EC Donation Kit to support your cause later this year!

EC & B4BC

Cancer awareness is a cause that has always been close to our hearts. This year the fight became personal when one of our own EC team members, Sam, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

As our entire team watched her battle (and win!) with grace, courage and steadfast determination we were inspired to create a revamped cancer awareness line and partner with an organization that could take our efforts even further.

Boarding for Breast Cancer (or B4BC), a foundation dedicated to breast cancer education and prevention, was the perfect partner to spearhead our fundraising efforts. With 50% of proceeds from sales of the cancer awareness collection going directly to the organization, we were able to raise over $4,000 in October alone.
Sam herself became even more involved and got to see firsthand the incredible support and work that B4BC is doing at this year’s “Chasing Sunshine” retreat.
She shared her experience with us, saying that at first she felt apprehensive committing to the weekend, being only two weeks post-surgery and understandably mentally and physically weak. A born fighter, Sam never complained and never appeared afraid, remaining strong for her two children and inspiring us all.

She was worried that the weekend would be rehashing the pain, fear and the injustice of the disease. Her tumors were gone but the wounds were literally and physically still fresh and she did not want to dwell. I’ll let Sam’s quote speak directly to her experience:

“I was 100% incorrect in thinking I was walking into a weekend of “woe is me,” rehashing diagnoses and treatments. The weekend was filled with positive people, positive experiences, genuine empathy and a sympathy and sisterhood that only someone who has traveled this devastating path can understand. Everyone helped me with the activities I was physically unable to perform and we shared some amazing conversations and experiences. We all felt so grateful to be alive, and I just felt so fortunate to connect with such a supportive organization and group of women.”

We are so proud to be associated with both Sam, everyone at B4BC and all of the fighters out there beating, battling & going to bat for a cure for cancer.
